The Kenan Institute helped the NC Land of Water (NC LOW) organize a symposium on the Future of North Carolina’s Barrier Islands that was held on March 22, 2016 at the James B. Hunt Library at NC State. The event was moderated by Kenan Institute Trustee Dr. Betsy Bennett and featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Bill Schlesinger, Dean Emeritus of Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. The program also featured a presentation of a documentary developed by Mr. Tom Earnhardt of UNC-TV’s “Exploring North Carolina” as well as a panel discussion with Dr. Stan Riggs of ECU, Mr. Bill Ross (former Secretary of the NC Department of Natural Resources, Mr. Derb Carter (Director of the Southern Environmental Law Center, and Representative Pricey Harrison. Approximately 150 individuals attended the event which was also live-streamed over the internet. Sponsors of the event included ECU, Fred and Alice Stanback, NC Coastal Federation, Southern Environmental Law Center, Audubon North Carolina, and the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at UNC.
