The EPSS is a joint effort between the College of Engineering and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and aims to provide opportunities to all students within COE and CHASS to critically examine the link between engineering science and technology and society and public policy. The seminar series examines critical issues linking engineering, science and technology, policy, and social contexts and consequences. Topic areas include a range of science and technology contexts and social, cultural, and political dimensions. Speakers include regional, national, and international figures across multiple engineering, social science, and humanities fields, representing academia, industry, government, non-governmental organizations, and the media. An EPSS function on Hydraulic Fracturing was held on April 23, 2013 featuring Vikram Rao (Executive Director of the Research Triangle Energy Consortium and member of NC Mining and Energy Commission), Kenneth B. Taylor (State Geologist of North Carolina, North Carolina Geological Survey and member of NC Mining and Energy Commission), and Amy Pickle (Nicholas Institute, Duke University and member of NC Mining and Energy Commission)
